June is Fellowship month as well as being the end of the Rotary year. Friendship and fellowship are the reasons our members keep coming back year after year. Our Club Forum showed that it is the number one reason that our members remain Rotarians. Each weekly meeting provides the opportunity to meet and connect with friends and our night meetings provide a more relaxed opportunity to catch up. At the weekly lunch meetings we aim to have the meeting finished by 1:45pm so that people can return to work and that means a very strict timeline needs to be adhered to. Whereas at the night meeting there is a bit of latitude with the time and so there is more time for conversation and fellowship. In the coming weeks there are a number of opportunities to enjoy the fellowship of our fellow members, we have this week’s night meeting, the Club Changeover on the 27th June, and the District Changeover on the 29th June. Please come along and join in, your presence makes each occasion better.

As it is the end of the Rotary year many “lasts” are fast approaching for this year’s presidents and their boards while at the same time firsts will take place for our Presidents Elect, Ejanul. Thursday 6th June sees the “last” of our regular night meetings for the year and should prove to be an excellent evening, with entertainment being provided by Montana Alguera-Lara from Footscray City College.

Montana is the student chosen to receive this year’s Lawrence and Margaret Atley Music Scholarship. Our thoughts and best wishes will be with Margaret Atley who is ill in hospital. Lawrence will attend the meeting to present the music award named in his and Margaret’s honour.

Another last coming up is the Board meeting that will be held next Tuesday 11th June. The day has been changed due to the public holiday for the Queen’s Birthday on the Monday. The new Board members are also invited to this meeting.

Following that “last” is the cluster meeting on Friday 14th June where the outgoing Presidents and the incoming presidents from the Hobsons Bay Cluster will get together and share a meal at the Yarraville Club. It is the same venue where last year’s meeting of the incoming and outgoing Presidents was held.

Then our Changeover night at Windmill Gardens will be my last official club function as President of the Rotary Club of Footscray. I am looking forward to a most enjoyable evening, and hope you can join Ejanul and I in this special celebration.

At our Club Forum in April members present on the day provided suggestions for the following questions about our club’s future members. The information has been provided to the Board and will be useful for future planning. If you were not at the forum and have a suggestion to add under any of the questions please e-mail your suggestions and I will add them to our list.

Who are they? Where do we find them?

  1. Rotoractors
  2. People associated with our programs
  3. Each member to introduce one member
  4. Local businesses
  5. Target leaders from ethnic communities
  6. Encourage our members to attend regularly
  7. Advertising, social media
  8. Local organisations and institution

How Do We Let Them Know That They Are Welcome?

  1. Personal invitation – personal approach
  2. Accept variable time commitment from prospective members
  3. Involve new people in projects
  4. New member information nights
  5. Enjoy and warmly welcome
  6. Improve mentoring/buddy program
  7. Active socializing

What Can We Do Differently?

  1. Find out what people want from Rotary today
  2. Marketing program – materials
  3. Information evening to inform prospective Rotarians as to what is expected and see if it suits.
  4. Introduce an associate membership
  5. Flexibility
  6. Future fund – building
  7. Run a local business breakfast/lunch
  8. Explore what community wants of Rotary

What are the negatives? What makes it hard?

  1. Attendance requirements/time
  2. Financial commitments – not just the fees
  3. Clear understanding of Rotary purpose
  4. Other avenues to support the community
  5. Society changes/work/outlook/commitment
  6. Perception of being an old person’s club

I would like to thank everyone for their contribution on the day and invite further contributions from all out members.

Maria

Tabcorp Park in Melton was the venue for this years District Assembly entitled Rotary Engaged. The coming year’s theme is “Engage Rotary, Change Lives”. There will be an emphasis on the engagement of every Rotarian and on cooperation between clubs in creating and completing projects. All members are being encouraged to become more involved in their clubs and club projects. A few weeks ago I included a list of reasons why people stayed in Rotary, why they kept coming back year after year and top of the list were friendships and making a difference and both these can only be achieved through continuing engagement. The more you put in, the more you will get out of your membership.

I invite any member and especially our newer members who have not attended a Rotary Leadership Course to have a look at the dates of the courses for 2013/14 and think about attending. This course is completed in three sessions and is not just for people who will become president. The sessions are completed in order, Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 but there is no time frame of when the courses must be completed. You can start this year and then do Part 2 next year. You can also choose to complete just one or two sessions, it is not compulsory to complete all three. The course is interesting and gives you a much richer and deeper knowledge of Rotary than you can get from attending the weekly meetings.

Rotary Leadership Institute Training Dates 2013/14

Part 1: 25th August 2013, 8th September 2013, 15th March 2014, 13th April 2014

Part 2: 6th October 2013, 4th May 2014

Part 3: 17th November 2013, 1st November 2014

Registrations are online at: http//www.rotarydistrict9800.com.au/news/1627/rotaryleadership-institute

You are important to our club, we need your ideas, passion and skills. Take up the challenge and find your own way to become more involved.
